Very fascinating book that kept my attention from start to finish. John Sergent Wise was born at the perfect time and the son of a future Gov. of Virgina and then Confederate General to see first hand so many amazing events of the time.

He was a VMI cadet who fought at New Market. He met and knew such men as President Jefferson Davis, Gen.Jubal Early,Gen. William Mahone, as well as Robert E. Lee and he gives a lot of detail in his relationships with these great men.

He gives his account of the sentiments and feelings of the people and places during these turbulent times during the Southern war for independence.

Great book and the best I've read since I read Edward Porter Alexanders Fighting For The Confederacy. Highly recommend!

The End Of An Era John Sergeant Wise 9781140033431 Books Reviews

If you are a student of the American Civil War, this books is a must-read volume.

It is written by the son of Gov. and Brig. Gen John A Wise and describes the life and times of a well-to-do youth from the plantations of Tidewater Virginia. It clearly describes the attitudes and allegiances of the planter class to the customs and tradition of slavery and inherited wealth and power.

Mr. Wise is far more clueless than Lord Robert Crawley of Downton Abbey fame on the subject of the winds of change in his society and the death rattles of his way of life. And from this book one can clearly see the underpinnings of what we now describe as "The Lost Cause", a blind dedication to a former glory and life of absolute privilege.
very good but some of the time of events are confusing. The personal accounts are great.
This author provides a very helpful participant's point of view to events in and after the Civil War.
Great insight into the "south" prior and during the War Between the States. Very good read, since it was primarily written in the 19th century.
This is probably one of the best history books I've ever read. It prompted me to learn more about John Wise and his origins...
Excellent account of the authors's VMI days and the antebellum period as well as the Civil War
Amazing history of part of pre Civil War Virginia written in 1893 by a southerner who saw the light. His family was right in the middle of it all.
